Report on Marie Curie (Grade 3, Chemistry)
Report on Marie Curie*
Marie Curie was born on November 7, 1867, in Warsaw (modern-day Poland). (From https://www.biography.com/scientists/marie-curie last visited on February 16, 2023.) Her major scientific contribution was opening the gate to the nuclear age. She discovered that radium was dangerous, and still is today, but it also has good uses like electricity.
Madame Curie and her husband, who was a doctor, spent years trying to find radium. However, it made them very ill, and to this day, her tomb releases radiation.
It is important to learn about Madame Curie because people who use radium need to know its good and bad uses.
Report on Louis Pasteur (Grade 3, Chemistry)
Report on Louis Pasteur
Most research came from the book Pasteur’s Fight Against Microbes by Beverley Birch and Christian Birmingham.
Louis Pasteur was born on December 27, 1822, in Dole, France. His major scientific contribution was defeating microbes or bacteria. Some microbes are helpful to the body, but others harm people and cause diseases. (https://www.biography.com/scientists/louis-pasteur, last visited on February 15, 2023.)
One day, Monsieur Pasteur was with his friend, Monsieur Bigo. They were experimenting with fermenting sugar beets. However, there was a foul smell all over the factory. There were two bottles of fermented sugar beets, one had foul smell, one was okay. He smelled the okay smelling one, and there were yeasts there that were making alcohol. Then he looked at the foul smelling one in his microscope, and saw tiny rods that were swimming! His study eventually revealed that these tiny rods were microbes caused by dust.
Monsieur Pasteur went on to make the vaccine. It puts weak microbes into the body, training it to defeat them when they meet.
It’s important to learn about Monsieur Pasteur because it helps kids understand that they actually need a vaccine to help the body stay healthy and to help fight against microbes.
